Social Procurement as a Driver of Inclusive Business in Thailand’s Agrifood Sector

A new working paper developed by United Nations ESCAP in collaboration with Yunus Thailand examines the growing role of social procurement in advancing inclusive business across Thailand’s agrifood value chains.

Drawing on in-depth research, including stakeholder consultations, company insights, and analysis of real-world implementation, the report provides a comprehensive view of how social procurement is being applied in practice, as well as the opportunities and constraints shaping its adoption.

At its core, social procurement offers a strategic approach for integrating impact-driven suppliers, such as social enterprises, community enterprises, and inclusive businesses, into mainstream value chains. By doing so, it enables companies to move beyond traditional sourcing practices and contribute more directly to addressing social and economic inequalities, while also strengthening environmental outcomes.

As ESG considerations continue to gain prominence, social procurement is emerging as a practical lever for aligning business strategy with sustainability objectives. For companies operating in the agrifood sector, this approach not only supports more resilient and inclusive supply chains, but also responds to increasing expectations from stakeholders, investors, and consumers.

This report is particularly relevant for businesses, policymakers, and practitioners seeking actionable insights into how procurement practices can drive both commercial value and measurable social impact.
