Women Empowerment through Seaweed Social Business in Southern Thailand: A Path to Resilience and Community Strength
28 November 2024, In Southern Thailand, women's empowerment is becoming an increasingly important focus, particularly in light of the region's unique cultural and socio-economic landscape. While the southern border provinces face distinct challenges, there are many opportunities for women to play a vital role in economic and community development. Efforts to overcome traditional gender roles and cultural stigmas are helping create a more inclusive environment where women can actively contribute to society. These initiatives are supported by a growing recognition of the importance of women's leadership and the value they bring to both local and regional progress.
The Seaweed Social Business project, based in Satun, southern Thailand, is dedicated to promoting the sustainable growth of the seaweed industry by the collaboration with มหาวิทยาลัยเกษตรศาสตร์ , Prince of Songkla University Pattani Campus, The Scottish Association For Marine Science, Global Seaweed Coalition , Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office Asia Pacific and the generous support of Embassy of Canada to Thailand | Ambassade du Canada en Thaïlande. The initiative focuses on empowering women in seaweed cultivation and entrepreneurship, while also working to preserve marine ecosystems and enhance food security. Initiatives financially supported by our main generous donors; the Global Seaweed Coalition and the Canadian Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI), are vital for fostering empowerment among women in this region.
The Global Seaweed Coalition and The CFLI have played crucial roles in empowering women through programs that promote seaweed farming and skills development. The 50 women involved in the Seaweed Social Business project have engaged in learning that encompasses entrepreneurship, data collection, sales training, marketing, and financial literacy. This training equips them with essential skills to operate their seaweed businesses and builds their confidence to navigate societal challenges. The partnership with the Global Seaweed Coalition has introduced technical expertise and global market insights, enhancing the program's reach and impact. Empowering women in this manner promotes economic independence and enables them to contribute more actively to their communities.
Support within the women’s community has fostered a strong sense of solidarity and mutual assistance. In the three communities of Tutaelum, Kabang, and BorchedLuk, the act of women helping one another has led to deep bonds that enhance cohesion. For instance, women share resources such as tools and information and collaborate on marketing efforts to promote their seaweed products. This support improves individual business outcomes and reinforces the collective identity and resilience of these communities. With guidance from the Seaweed Social Business team, the women have gained access to improved cultivation methods and market networks, further boosting their businesses. As they work together, the women create a network that transcends individual ambitions, fostering collaboration that strengthens the social fabric of the sub-districts.
The project has achieved significant milestones and continues to make progress with innovative outcomes: We are actively developing a range of high-value, nutritional, and safe Caulerpa-derived products that are certified and market-ready, creating new income opportunities for community entrepreneurs. This ongoing project strengthens the social business capacity of women seaweed entrepreneurs and stakeholders across the value chain by ensuring adherence to consumer, occupational, and environmental safety standards. Our Social Business Model has proven to be a valuable case study, showcasing how unity and collaboration among stakeholders can drive benefits for local communities and the broader province. Building on this success, we are expanding the replication of this model by establishing a build-operate-transfer social business framework through the creation of an education hub within schools and nearby academic institutions. This innovative approach aims to promote public education on seaweed, raise awareness about clean oceans, and cultivate a culture of sustainability, ultimately fostering long-term community empowerment.
